The Story Behind the Kitchen
Four Decades of Cooking. One Family’s Story.
Welcome to Burmawala Kitchen, where recipes become memories and every dish tells a story spanning three countries, two generations, and over 40 years of cooking with love.
I am a proud mum of Burmese-Indian heritage, born into a world of bold spices, fragrant broths, and tables laid with food made entirely from scratch. Alhumdulillah, that tradition has never left me.
My own mother was born in Burma. I was born here in the UK and grew up on her cooking, learning her recipes in our kitchen and making them my own over the years.
This blog is a labour of love, centred around the cuisines of Burma, India and Pakistan. From the comforting warmth of a Burmese Mohinga, to the smoky depth of a Pakistani Karahi, to the slow cooked richness of an Indian Rogan Josh, these are the dishes I have cooked for my family for decades, and now I cook them for yours.
Every recipe on this site is one I have made many times over. I do not share anything I have not perfected myself. These are not approximations or shortcuts. They are the real thing, passed down through generations and enriched by my own years of experience. When you cook from this blog, you are cooking the way my mother taught me, and her mother taught her.
I want Burmawala Kitchen to be more than a recipe website. I want it to be a place where you discover the beauty of cuisines that do not always get the spotlight they deserve, especially Burmese food, which remains one of the most underappreciated in the world. I hope these recipes open up a new world of flavour for you.
